Hokitika, New Zealand

In the middle of our road trip around New Zealand, we needed to find a place to spend the night. We chose Hokitika on our friends' suggestion. It's a small town, but a perfect place to spend the night. Hokitika is right along the coast of the Tasman Sea. It's the home of many, many jade shops, the quaint Cafe de Paris and the best sunsets.

Town center in sweet light.

Oh, the sunset was so beautiful here. I saw the sun setting just after we placed our dinner order at the Cafe de Paris, so I excused myself from the table and ran out the door with my camera. Well, I didn't exactly run, I'd hate for them to think I was ordering-and-dashing. I'm so glad I did.

Here's where I need your help. I'm really proud of the next two pictures I took of this fisherman finishing up for the day. It's so rare that I love the pictures I take, but I lucked out with these. And I sort of want to submit one for the United/Hemispheres Travel Photo Contest next year. Only I cannot pick. If you read this and have an opinion, please leave me a note in the comments and tell me which one you like better!! Thank you for indulging me.

After dinner, we made our way back to our hotel, which was more a series of beachside cabins along the sea. The sweet light/almost darkness was really cool there, so I took a couple more photos.

  2. I studied both for a while, and I think the first one is more awesome. (In a rare move, I'm using the actual meaning of the word here.)

  3. Both pictures are extraordinary, but I agree with prior votes. The silhouettes and light in the first photo should be very competitive. Good luck with the contest, and I must report that I'm quite jealous of your blossoming photographic talents.
